Finding Your Niche (Stage 2)
What is a niche? a marketing strategy targeting a certain portion of the population.
Example: you want to sell all different kinds health products, but then find out a few certain types of
health foods are more profitable and also find that few websites are selling these certain
products.
Need to find your niche?
If you want to create a website to make money, but not
really sure what products/service to sell. Don't worry, by doing some research, you will be able to find a
profitable niche. Make sure you are looking for a product that you have interest in. Stick to your
passion!
Look at eBay. Go to the home page and click on the tab for
"buy" and look at all of the different categories. Let's say you are interested in sports. When you click on
the category title, it will show you all of the categories within that Exercise and Fitness, Golf, Hunting,
Fishing, Archery and the list goes on. Ok, so you enjoy golfing. Any of the sub-categories could be made into
a niche website. You could create a website on just books and videos for golfing.
You could build a profitable eBay niche
business.
Look at Amazon, see what the bestselling items
are.
Still nothing captures your interest? Look at any big site
that is selling products and look at the bestsellers. Many times this will help you locate a niche that
you may not have thought about:
- You like to read self-help books. Do you not
think that other people are reading self-help books also?
- Specialized information you know from your
current job.
- A hobby or special
interest
- You have expert knowledge in your current
job
Already know your niche
products?
Then you need to make sure that the product (or products)
have not already saturated the market. Example: you decide that your niche product will be the next big
weight loss pill.
- How many other people are already selling
it?
- How are they selling it? (affiliate marketing
or dropship)
- Selling on any of the auction
sites?
- Can you sell it
cheaper?
- Would it be a profitable niche for
you?
1. Let's say your product is called Golf Tips. Go to Google advanced search (next to the search button) and type in Golf Tips in the
Find Results with the exact phrase. Change your results to show 100. When your results come back, go to the
last page, scroll all the way to the bottom. There you will see the most relevant results for your product.
If this number is under 600 or so, then this may be a great niche for your website. Under the relevant
results on the last page, you will also see other searches that people have used that are relevant to your
product.
2. Check on auction sites. Do a
search for that product and see how many listings come up and see if the product is being bid on. Also check
the completed listing. To do a completed listing search (on eBay) you must be signed in. If you are not
registered for eBay, you are able to sign-up free. Go to advanced search and put in your product name. Under
where you type your keyword, click on the box that says Completed Listings Only. You can quickly scan this
list and see: 1. If you product is selling well. 2. How much is it selling for. 3. Would it be worth your
time getting into that niche.
3. To sell the product on a website as either an affiliate or by dropshipping, take a look at your competition and see
how they are selling it. Find your competition: do step one and look at the first 5 - 10 websites and see how
they are selling it. You may find that the top 5 - 10 websites are huge companies. Amazon, Ebay, etc....look
down a little further and I bet you will be able to find the "small stores", take a look at their website
layout. Informational site? "how to" site? Do you like their design? Is it just a landing page (sales letter)
for the product or do they have relevant content on the product?
